Discern

Technical SEO for complex websites.

On a large site, small technical decisions become expensive. One template can affect thousands of pages. Filters can create millions of useless URLs. A quiet rendering or canonical change can remove valuable sections from search.

Discern finds where crawling, rendering, indexation and architecture are limiting organic growth. We turn the evidence into a prioritised plan and engineering tickets your team can actually use.

For ecommerce sites, marketplaces, directories and comparison platforms operating at scale. Think tens of thousands of URLs, multiple templates or filters, frequent releases and small changes with sitewide consequences.

The conversation usually starts here

  • “A large part of the site is not being indexed.”
  • “Inventory keeps growing, but organic traffic does not.”
  • “Developers have an SEO backlog, but nobody knows what matters first.”
  • “We are about to migrate, redesign or change platforms.”
  • “We want to scale programmatic pages without creating a mess.”

You probably do not need another 200-line audit. Start with a focused investigation.

Technical SEO Audit

A fixed-scope investigation of the systems, templates and page types affecting organic performance. From £6,000. Most standard scopes take around 15 working days once access is available.

It examines:

  • crawling, indexation, robots, sitemaps, canonicals and server logs
  • JavaScript rendering, page templates, performance and technical regressions
  • site architecture, taxonomy, faceted navigation and internal linking
  • programmatic pages, structured data, international and multi-site signals
  • commercial opportunity, implementation effort and risk by page type

You receive an evidence-led report, prioritised backlog, engineering tickets with acceptance criteria, a 90-day roadmap and a final briefing for marketing, product and engineering.

Take it to your team, your agency or nobody. It is yours either way. No retainer required and no sales prelude disguised as an audit.

Ongoing Technical SEO

One flexible retainer, scoped after the audit. Typically £4,000 to £8,000 a month.

It can include:

  • technical SEO roadmap and commercial prioritisation
  • developer-ready tickets and support for product and engineering
  • staging reviews, release QA and post-launch validation
  • scheduled crawling, log analysis and regression monitoring
  • incident investigation, reporting and the next set of priorities

The precise scope depends on site complexity, release cadence and support already available in-house. Your team retains control of the website and ships the changes.

Month to month. No fixed term.

About

Discern was founded by Lucy Kirkness, who has worked in organic search for 14 years and spent six of them building and leading an SEO agency for financial services.

Her previous client experience includes CoinShares and Fiserv. Before SEO, Lucy also spent five months as a private investigator. The job was brief. The habit of following evidence and questioning easy answers was not.

Discern is small on purpose. Software and AI handle repetitive collection, comparison and checking. Senior SEO judgement remains human: we review the evidence, decide what matters and sign off every recommendation.

From previous client work

The report is absolutely superb. No waffle. Just facts and action points, clearly laid out and illustrated. Our MD was almost purring when she read it.

Rory, CEO

We’re getting better-quality traffic on the site because we’re reaching our target audience.

Mike, VP Marketing

Lucy is very thorough, transparent and up to date on the latest techniques. Highly recommend and a pleasure to speak to.
